BASW Senior Field Internship During the final year of the BASW program, students complete a 450-hour internship (in total for the Fall and Spring semesters). Students are in the agency for 16 hours per week, either two days of 8 hours or a full day of eight hours and two days of 4 hours. Students receive 1 hour of supervision per week by a social worker with a BASW or MSW degree. Students are enrolled in parallel practice courses as well as a field seminar on campus. For seniors, the focus is on working with individuals, small groups and families. The focus is on improving students` skills in solving value dilemmas, developing and exploiting professional relationships, interviewing, problem-defining and collecting data, conducting initial assessments, recording, prioritizing their practice, learning from the agency, and finding resources on behalf of client systems. Students also learn to work with larger systems, i.e. large groups, communities and organizations. Their experience in higher education must be in the range of their concentration. Practical issues from the perspective of micro, mezzo and macrosystems are addressed throughout the programme and focus on individual, family, group and community areas of study/treatment. Academic Year Model This is our traditional program for MSW students who need to complete a 500-hour internship for a total of 1000 hours in two academic years. Internships start in early September and end in mid-May.
Students are in the agency 16 hours a week, either two days of 8 hours or a full day of eight hours and two days of 4 hours. Students are enrolled in practical courses and field seminars at the same time as their internship. All our students are covered by professional misconduct/liability insurance. During the second year of the field, students build on the core competencies developed during their first year. Students are expected to handle a greater number of cases or assignments, develop a better understanding and understanding of the agency`s and/or client`s systems and skills, and begin practicing independently. Students can apply for a macro internship for their second-year internship. Macro-internship students should experience a wide range of experiences in administration, planning, program development/evaluation, and community organizing. They are expected to develop the ability to transfer basic practical skills into macro-practice. Place of work: Students who are employed in social welfare offices can request an assessment from their agencies to determine if they are suitable for their second-year internship location.
The agency must be able to provide a qualified field teacher and experience different from the student`s usual responsibilities. These applications are evaluated individually by the Director of Education in the field. Our graduate program welcomes 2-year full-time students and 3-year part-time students in the September-May model of the academic year. We also offer a permanent advanced program that allows students with a BASW degree to complete the MSW program in 12 calendar months, using the same field internship from June to May of the following year. The program includes – practice (individual, group and macro courses), politics, human behavior, research methods, applied social work projects and field education courses. First-year field internships offer students the opportunity to develop a foundation of skills that are fundamental to the practice of social work. These core competencies include a range of treatment questions and theoretical models, as well as a number of different cases. .
